Experiments with medium format camera

So,

this time it´s a little bit off the topic that relates normally to filmmaking or pro-shootings. This is about an experiment with an 35mm film roll, or better two rolls in a mag of the Mamiya RB67 medium format camera.

To start this little trail you have tot equip yourself with two 35mm Negativfilm (or slide film will also do), a 220 Mag of the Mamiya, two cartridge film spools, a scissor, sticky tape and something like a changing tent.

The reason of the 220 mag is important, because if you´re put the rolls into a 120 mag it could happen that the tracking i s irritated by the thickness of the film. Normaly the mediumformat rolls have the light-tight paper around it, but the negativ 35mm have not! So better try it with a 220 magazine.

First thing is practicing. If you have an old film practise the thread up to the spools. Be aware that the right side of the film has to face the optic... Otherwise you get a red shield effect, that could also look nice but you have to be aware of it. Otherwise you underexpose the film.

Cut the edges of the head of the film and fix it with sticky tape to the spools, so that it won´t loose itself from the spool while your shooting. The difference to the normal mediumformat film is enormous, it´s tight and by the transporting of the two stripes the films will othershift themself during the transport. Of course you can fix the whole stripes with tape on the backside, but it´s become more tight to transport it and it may crack the film. Besides this otherlapping film effect may look even cooler afterwards. After that roll the film to the spool, later in the tent you may have cloves to protect the film. After you reach the end of the film cut it from the container, stick it with tape together, cut the edges and stick it to the second cartridge spool. Then stick booth cartridge spools in the mag, arrange the film and be shure that the loaded spool rolled up propertly. than close the mag and you´re ready and you can start all over again...

After you find a good way to handle the thread up, try it blind in the changing ten, because you have to change the film without exposing it! If you managed it, the mag is prepared for shooting. I helped myself with a thick light-tight cloth (molton), take my 220 mag, two 35mm film, a scissor and the sticky tape underneath it and prepared as described above.

After shooting, you also take it out in the changing tent and put them into light-tight film canister. Inform your lab that in this canister is the naked film and they do the rest.

Afterwards you scan it like you scan the lomo filmstuff for example. There are several scanners which can scan the perforation, just google. I got an Canon8800 and I taped the film into my film guides for medium format and it worked quite well... well enough for this experiment.

And then match it together in photoshop and have fun!

CCCP Shooting with Michael Schulze

Last year I did my America Shooting, a political Pin Up Girl Photography and now it´s time to do it with the USSR. The whole idea was born by Michael Schulze who´s always been a helping hand to my projects and now I supported him in this shooting. We had an awesome location in an old steelfacility in Brandenburg, Germany and it was quite a work.
Micha was also shooting with an analog mediumformat camera and his results will turn up in a week and it will be posted in this blog as well. For that time being I help out with my shoots, that I´ve done there as well.

At the Dentist

Aus Productionshots
This week I got a chance to look behind the scenes of this dentist laboratory. After the clean environment of a chip facility I got into the clinical facility, but this time it was fussier than in the chip facility, because the laboratory manufactures tooth crowns and dentures... So this was the film work about. Here you can see me shooting the milling machine in the laboratory...

Low Budget Showreel Offer - Example online

Spontaneously last week I met with a close friend of mine and we shot a little material for his showreel in Berlin. He´s actor and we spent not much time for this clip, just 3 hours in the evening. So, if anybody wants something like that don´t hesitate to contact me and we can talk about realisation and budget, but as the title say: it´s low budget, so it´s maybe the chance for actors to get some good material for a low costs. Hammer to Fall - Corronez and Ole Mikumi record a Queen Song

This week I was busy with an old friend of my in recording her voice for a demo CD. Normaly Corronez, that´s her artist name, doing in the middleage scene her perfomances and songs, but she´s also a great Queen Fan. So we record our special version of "Hammer to Fall" and I took the camera and made this little making of video. Normaly I use the sound setting for dubbing but it´s amazing what you can afford by using todays technology. 15 years ago I remember me sitting in the cellar with the band and we actually tape our self over and over until we got some of these noisy sounded tapes... Incredible what we can do today with just a mic and software. So here we are, I am introducing my third art, next to Film, Photography its the Music.

No Dust!

Today I was shooting for KOBN in a semiconductor facility in bavaria... high security level of course. There was locks, antistatic dresses, antistatic shoes and dustless environment, a dream of everybody who knows about sensor spots by changing lenses...
In the end of the day I got some detail shots about microchips and labour people who worked there under enormous conditions. It was very loud and if I would be there everyday I would go deaf and used to breath clean air... So, enjoy the picture above and let´s see if I can post in future about results.

The Library Fashion Shooting - Part II

©2011 by Michael Schulze
Yesterday, or let´s say this morning, we finished the second library fashion shooting in Potsdam. A few months ago we test this location and now we got a it for a serious thing for designer Nora Fritz and her dresses and skirts. First st was on the crane at the ground, after a little bit of rain we decided to go to the upper levels and shoot some pics with a bubble machine. In we end we got a lot of fun and I have to thank my assistents for their condition and willing to go thru this shooting until 2:30 a.m. and helping us with heavy light equipment. Also our Models, which participate very spontaneously and bear with us thru all this dust and dirt of the construction site... Thank you all!!!

Bring back the 80ties... with a spiderweb

A few weeks ago I got an arrangement with a Rigger who annonced a shoting in Berlin with a Bondage-theme. I was interested and had some theatrical spider theme idea related to the aesthetics of floating humans, the idea of the surrender of male by the females... so it´s all come down to a very 80ties-look-and-feel und I thought in the end by doing all this stuff with lights and studio... why don´t you film it anyway and move the photographical project more to a videoclip... So here we are, doing Dollyshots with a fabulous high prof Rigger from Frankfurt/Main, experienced female model "Dee Solutio", brave male model "Garcia" and my "potsdam dreamfilmteam"...

Destroyer of romantic - Nippon no yuhi

Last thursday evening I spend this german holiday (Herrentag, Vatertag) with a long kept vision of mine on a hill near Berlin. Since nearly 3 years now I wanted to shot a sailormoon girl with a katana at sunsetlight. Don´t ask me why, but now with the help of the Model May-Li and the Skirt design of Nora Fritz , I was able to catch this vision in my camera.
The only thing that I didn´t aware of was that on this day, everybody got off and spend the day also on this hill. In the end we were surrounded by party people, some drunk, some just looking for quite romantic view over Berlin, and we trying to get some shots with sword and a G-36 rifle. It was a kind of bizarre to have this weapons next to a couple which looking for romantic peace and from the other side we heared some tecno-rap-hiphop-pop-music from a mobilephone of a group of party-teenies... well, no place for romantic in this world to shoot "Japan´s sunset"...

TYPO Berlin 2011 - Impression Clip and what´s next?

So, here it is, the traditional closing film for europes biggest design conference TYPO Berlin 2011. I am doing filming for the TYPO since 2002 and it´s alway an interesting challenge to find a new way to shot this conference... This time I was simply inspirated by the topic "shift" to do some work with tilt-shift lenses and continue the way of the up-and-coming way of "mini-toyland-look" that´s done by every agency and TV-Station by now... I would normally say that by now, these effect is overloaded and the people got fed with it, but the reaction was quite good so I was good with it..

But beside this 5 minutes clip I provide the TYPO with a video podcast which you can see on the TYPO Berlin Videoblog site if you like, just click on "shift".

In the next few month I spend time in inscenical photography work with bondage, sailormoon action and of course I sit in the edit for KOBN. Results will be showing on this blog... Let´s start the summer!

So here is a sample, but be aware that this clip is an imagefilm and it´s very technical orientated... So no Popcorn.
